Waihe’e Ridge Trail

According to local websites, this is near #1 for hikes on Maui. We agree, this hike is awesome! Note that if you are staying on the coast in west Maui, it may be better to drive around to Kahului since the small roads on the north end of West Maui are tiny tiny – one lane width or less. If you start at the upper parking lot, then the hike (out and back) is just over 4 miles (6.44 km). The hike ends at a great view of West Maui, complete with a nice picnic bench for lunch, or just to sit and rest.

Waihe’e Ridge Trail — Maui Hikes

Out and back route

Invasive species shoe cleaning station.  We tried to use this shoe cleaning station, but the bristles were so worn down that all it achieved was a gentle scuffing of our shoe soles.

Main parking lot

Looking down towards the parking lot, you can see the availability, as well as the cow and horse fields nearby.

Initial uphill.

Cattle gate entrance

Weave your way through the entrance gate to start the fun part of the hike.

Kahului in the distance

Looking back you can see the city, the mall, and the main airport.

Waihee river gorge

Helicopters fly through this gorge regularly. As you hike, back in the moral superiority that comes from using your leg muscles to achieve views that others need a combustion engine and 4 rotors to enjoy.

Kahului in the distance

Is Kahului more in the distance now? That’s probably a philosophical question, or a trigonometric one, or both. Take solace knowing the answer is probably irrelevant, and hike onward to the summit!
